Keep Your Head Up

What Happens When We Fall?

This topic is super important, and one which we don’t talk about as much as we should. The topic is what to do when we fall down on our journey toward reaching our goals and vision. This is something we will inevitably do when we are going for the gold and taking chances to reach our vision. So what happens when you fall down or even get pushed down?

How do you react when you get kicked down by life, by circumstances, by your own choices, by others, by overwhelming emotions, etc? What do you do to get yourself back up? Or in the great poet, Tupac Shakur’s own words, how do you “keep ya head up” when times are tough and challenges are surmounting? How can we handle this adversity so that we can get back up on our feet, keep our heads up and come out victoriously on top of that mountain?!

It’s Not A Golden, Paved Road To The Top

So first off this is tough to hear: When you are going for what you want in life and fighting for that ring of the champion, it’s not an easy, paved road. It’s not the yellow-bricked-lolly-pop road you may wish that it is. Unfortunately wishing doesn’t equal being.

But let’s start on a positive note, because it’s always a good thing to start out with some positive sunshine. Some of the road will be like this. You will have magical parts of your road toward your goals where you will be astounded by how easy and smooth the road is for you. There will be times when other kind travelers will be on your road to provide a helping hand. And there will be times of breathtaking views on your road. But as “they” say, it’s not all sunshine and rainbows. I don’t exactly know who “they” are, but “they” happen to be correct in this instance. LOL.

Parts of your road toward your goals and vision are going to unfortunately NOT be so great. There are going to be sections of your road that are dark and lonely with crazy bumps and boulders that you will need to navigate over, under or around to keep it moving like we talked about in our last podcast and blog. There are even going to be awful, demented travelers on your path sometimes who are anything but helpful. Some might even be downright hurtful to you (think the “It Clown” asking if you want to play with him in the sewer grate).

Reality Isn’t All Rainbows

So this is the truth. Your road toward reaching your goals and your ultimate vision is going to be a mixed bag of both delightful and not so delightful experiences and emotions. The key is not to dwell on the negative side of things, but also not to trick yourself into thinking that the negative doesn’t exist either.

Because that doesn’t work either. You can’t manipulate the road in an attempt to forcefully only have sunshine and rainbows either. That’s called delusion. Or in other words, that is merely just putting on your blinders and avoiding a little thing called reality. Reality exists, and it’s perfectly ok. When you stop trying to sugar coat everything, reality doesn’t taste so bad anyway because you are not always just expecting sweet. You are ready for the bitter.

Keep A Positive Mindset

I’m certainly not saying that it’s still not important to remain positive. I’m all about positivity, optimism and looking on the bright side of things! But sometimes there can be a fine line between delusion (and/or illusion) and staying positive. If you have to trick your mind in order to tackle the bitter parts of life, please do so! That is brilliant. Just don’t lose touch with the reality of what you are dealing with either.

Face The Facts

So this brings me to my next point. When you face your challenges on your road to your vision and get knocked down, it’s important to face the facts of the situation so you can learn from them. And I’m talking about the actual facts which you can gather to the best of your ability. Not the made-up stories we like to tell ourselves!

You know, the self-made stories where we did absolutely nothing wrong and it was everyone else’s fault. Those kind of stories. And we all do this! It’s our natural human condition. But if you really look at the circumstance of your fall or obstacle from a more objective or factual perspective, you will gain so much more wisdom and strength out of it. Then you can use this wisdom and strength to your advantage to increase your power and go even further on your journey.

So this is really, really hard because we are all humans. However try not to immediately go to the blame game, play the victim, emotionally close off, shut-down or go raging bull against all of humanity when you get knocked down on your booty. You may naturally do this at first. But remember, knowledge is power. So being aware that this is how humans tend to react emotionally to these situations will help you stay grounded in these situations.

And if you don’t get it right straight away, that’s perfectly ok and normal. Take some deep breaths, walk away if you need to, go to nature, listen to music, workout or do whatever it is that helps you get re-centered. Then circle back around when you are calmer and ask yourself: What are the actual facts of the situation? Then gather, write down and analyze the facts. Learn from the situation, take the lessons you need and then move on. Don’t dwell.

Stand In Your Integrity

So another important part of keeping your head up during the challenging times of your journey is keeping your integrity. Standing in your integrity throughout your quest toward your goals is so, so important!

Brene Brown, an expert researcher on vulnerability and an amazing speaker and writer, defines integrity as the following: “Integrity is choosing courage over comfort; choosing what is right over what is fun, fast, or easy; and choosing to practice our values rather than simply professing them.”

It can be extremely tempting to reach your goals the fast or easy way. It can be very alluring to compromise your values to get ahead quicker. But that’s not the right way to go! It will always catch up to you in the end. We see it time and time again. And even if you get away with it with others, you didn’t get away with anything when it comes to the most important person…yourself. You still know what you did.

It’s a pretty awful feeling to know you are not living in your own integrity and authenticity. It really is. So stand in your own integrity. And then when you get to your desired destination, you can stand proudly because you will know you walked the hard road of integrity to get where you are standing! Oh yeah.

Get Back On Your Feet

Last but not least when you fall down, you can not stay down. You’ve got to get back up on your feet and keep fighting. Stay in the battle and keep on fighting the good fight until you reach your goals. Don’t let a few bumps and bruises along the way hold you back or hold you down. If you need to take a little mini-rest, do so. Always listen to your inner guidance system.

But then get back up and show ‘em what you are made of…pure steel, that’s what! You can plow through anything. Don’t ever forget that. If you have that mindset of can’t-stop-won’t-stop and you have integrity, there isn’t anything or anybody who can hold you down. So keep your head up and believe that. I do.

The Heart Of A Champion

“It ain’t about how hard you hit. It’s about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward.”

Those are Rocky Balboa’s words. I mean if Rocky the Champ says it, what else is there to really say?
