We Can Stop Ourselves From Victory

So what can stop us from reaching our goals and our ultimate vision in life? Turns out we can. Why? Because we often set self-limitations for ourselves which turn into road blocks on our path to success.

What is so ridiculous and almost comical about this little nugget of truth is that we are literally stopping our OWN selves from reaching what we want and desire in life with these self-limitations. I think Alanis Morisette would describe that best as “Isn’t it ironic. Don’t you think?”

The brain is crazy like that. So we set goals and then stop ourselves from achieving these very goals with nothing more than our own mental blockages that we create within our brains. Yeah, no one has ever claimed that the brain makes sense all the time!

Enough With “I’m Not Enough” Talk

So one self-imposed limitation we deal with is the example of negative self talk. You tell yourself you’re not smart enough, not capable enough, not lucky enough, not pretty or handsome enough, not connected enough, and on and on.

So I’m here to say enough with the “not enough” talk! It’s complete make believe nonsense that is merely part of being a human, but it is still a lie. And it’s a lie that feeds into the natural emotion of fear and tries to paralyze you and stop you on your journey to success. The great news is that you do not have to let it. You do not have to believe or give weight to this lie of “not enough.”

Squash The Negative Self Talk

I can 100% tell you that you are enough. You were born enough and will always be enough, regardless. So please stop buying into this mind trick that self limits you on this beautiful journey called life. Just stop. Make the decision that you are not going to believe this nonsense.

When your mind inevitably does start going into negative self talk as that little conniver will absolutely do since you are a human being, be aware of what that little gossiper known as your own brain is doing. Awareness is the first step. So be aware of what is occurring. Once you realize the conniver is up to no good again, then you can adequately handle it as needed. 

Deal with this negative self talk the same way you would deal with any other trash talker, bully or mean girl out there. Squash them. They are not worth your precious time or energy. So squash your thoughts the same way. Squash them by choosing to ignore the nonsense, and then start replacing these negative thoughts with more positive thoughts instead.

So instead of I’m not smart enough, try “I’m a freakin’ genius and can accomplish anything I put my mind to. And what I don’t know, I will learn.” Try that on for size. How’s that feel? Dang good right?

Instead of I’m not lucky enough, say “I’m the luckiest person to ever walk this earth; I’m as lucky as the Irish under a rainbow bathing in a pot of gold.” Way better isn’t it!

It Takes Time & Energy

So you may not believe your thought reversals at first because you are transforming your mindset which is not the most easy thing to do. It takes time and energy to change our mindsets. Because our brains like efficiency and the path of least resistance, the mind automatically wants to go with the familiar.

So when you are shaking up the brain to change the mindset (aka: raking the rut which we talked about in the prior blog and podcast), then your brain is going to resist at first. But keep at it! Because your brain will cut new paths with your new positive thoughts.

These new, incredible and empowering thoughts will eventually become your new normal. This is the change of the mindset required to better serve you and get you where you want to go in life.  

Murder & Rebirth Tips 

So there are a few tips to help you out with this new birth of the mindset and murder of your old self-imposed limitations. Yeah I said murder, LOL. Ok this may be extreme, but I do believe you need to full on attack and kill negative thought patterns to live the fullest life you can possibly live.

So here are some pointers to help you achieve this:

  1. It Takes Consistency

Negative thought squashing and positive thought replacement takes consistency. This is the case with changing any existing habit. This is not going to be a shooting star flash-of-an-instant process. It’s going to take time, consistency and effort.

Effort is so important. I’m a strong believer that you get what you put into things. So if you really want this, you’ve got to consistently put in the effort. There just isn’t any other way around it. And when you start getting discouraged, don’t give up!

Remember it takes time for the flower to bloom after you plant the seed. That doesn’t mean it’s not growing and blossoming just because you don’t see the fully bloomed flower yet.

There is no exact time for how long it takes to change a habit, but most experts believe this can take anywhere from the famous 21 day theory rule to well over 2 months. It really just depends on the situation, the person and both the effort and consistency put into it.

So if you are consistently working hard and are still not where you want to be, please don’t get discouraged. It takes time, but you’ll get there. Have faith and trust it!

2. Set Stretch Goals

We talked about stretch goals in the podcast Goal Digging. A stretch goal is just like it sounds. It is a goal that makes you stretch. Stretch out of where you ask? Hmm, how about stretching out of your comfort zone for starters!

I can assure you that going outside of your comfort zone is at first not comfortable. But this is how you grow or stretch. You will not grow or reach a new destination if you are not stretching yourself out of your norm.

If you want more, you have to do more. If you want different, then you must do different. That’s how it works.

So in other words, don’t set low expectations or standards for yourself. These are also self-imposed limitations. You don’t want goals to be super easy anyways right? Boring! Stretch yourself and you are guaranteed to grow.

Is it scary to pack up and move out of your comfort zone (or comfy land as I like to call it)? Heck yes. But is it worth it in the long term? Double heck yes! So don’t let fear stop you.

3. Play Mind Tricks

So we’ve already brushed on this. But just to reiterate, you will need to be creative to trick your mind into believing your new thoughts. This will look different to everyone because you need to get your brain to actually believe your new positive thoughts.

So sometimes vision boards work for people. Another example that can work is pretending like you’ve already reached your goal in your mind. So if your goal is to purchase property for example, pretend and believe you already own that property in your mind.

I know this can feel a little silly sometimes, but it actually can be pretty fun to play make believe. We certainly enjoyed when we were little kids.

Get creative and have fun with this. Just try out different tricks to see what works for you. This will look different for everyone.

4. You Are Who You Run With

So this saying has been legit drilled into my head since childhood by my father, LOL. However I must admit there is something to be said about this concept. If you want higher, better things in your life, then you need to surround yourself with like-minded people who also strive for improvement.

If you are hanging with a crew that’s holding you back with things like negative energy, criticism or questionable behavior, it’s going to be a much tougher journey for you. There is no two ways about it.

If on the other hand you surround yourself with others who are also striving for better, then you can help each other toward goal achievement instead of hinder each other. You can also help each other stay motivated instead of getting pushed off track over and over. And you all know what I’m talking about here.

We’ve all had people in our lives who have held us back instead of helped move us forward. I’m not in any way saying this is the other person’s fault or that you should even negatively judge these other people. To each their own.

But when it comes down to it, you have to do what is best for you. This can be really difficult, but it can also be essential for our ultimate success.

So who’s ready to kick some butt and squash stupid nonsensical self-limitations? Me! I’m raising my hand high and proud right now. 

So in honor of St. Patrick’s Day which we just celebrated and to boost our lucky dreams, below is the Traditional Irish Blessing (combined with the last two sentences which is another Irish saying I like):

“May the road rise up to meet you.

May the wind always be at your back.

May the sun shine warm upon your face,

and rains fall soft upon your fields.

And until we meet again,

May God hold you in the palm of His hand.”

“May good luck be with you, where ever you go.

And your blessings outnumber the shamrocks that grow.”
